Assignment #3 | Top 10 Inventions Revisited

Hi all,

This week, Professor Lavian expressed that we should constantly leverage a collective knowledge of ideas, and build on top of it to create higher level of understanding. I wholeheartedly agree, and after careful review of my peers' blogs, I have built a new list of my Top-10 inventions. In an effort to effectively learn as much as possible from you all, I have completely changed my list to include ten new inventions below. Looking forward to hearing your comments and feedback!

Democracy – I believe the invention of democracy has revolutionized the way many countries like the United States think about government. Democracy gives power and choice to the people, in a fair an equal system where no one ruler decides the fate of a country. Without democracy, many governments would turn to dictatorships and the United States would function under a radically different system. 

Irrigation system – Irrigation systems allow for the artificial application of water to land or soil. The system dates back thousands of years, and it is so vital for the production of crops. Without an organized irrigation system, it would be impossible for society to produce enough food from the land in order to feed people. 

Clock – The clock is an invention that really stood out to me as I look through my peers' blogs. As someone who is very dependent on my calendar and timing, this invention especially resonated with me. The clock is on my revised list because it ensures order and allows for effective communication between people. Without this invention, communication would be nearly impossible because no one would understand the concept of meeting times.

Airplane – Although I had the gasoline-powered automobile on my original list, I had to include the airplane on my revised list mainly because of its impact on travel and trade. Without the airplane, it would take a great deal longer to travel over bodies of water. No to mention, planes are much safer than traveling on the water itself. 

Language – Written language is one of the most crucial inventions that I was really interested to see on a few blogs. From books to all other forms of written text, language is so crucial to communication and the sharing of information. Without written language, it would be extremely difficult to share ideas and knowledge with others today.

Mouse – The computer mouse is one of the most important inventions because it allows any computer user to decide a direction of movement. Whether the user is choosing an application, drawing a picture, or commanding an operation, the mouse is vital to the control of the computer. 

The Plow – The Plow is a cutting tool used to prepare soil for planting. Although it seems relatively simple, the plow actually revolutionized the way that food is grown, and also made it possible for much greater quantities of food to be produced. 

Carbon Fiber – I found carbon fiber to be one of the most interesting inventions I found on any blog this week. As an extremely strong, yet lightweight metal, carbon fiber is one of the most remarkable inventions to date. It is five times as strong as steel, but weighs two-thirds less. Carbon fiber also has the ability to reduce fuel consumption, and I believe many uses of this metal are still being discovered today!

Artificial Organs – Artificial organs are one of the most amazing inventions in the field of healthcare. With regards to many diseases or injuries that cause organs to function improperly, artificial organs have the potential to return patients to a healthy state of life. There are a variety of applications for artificial organs, and I am very excited by any new applications within healthcare for artificial organs. 

GPS – I am actually surprised that I did not include GPS on my original list, especially because of how dependent I am on this particular invention. GPS allows for accurate navigation based upon a space-based satellite system. Many government agencies are dependent on GPS to understand the whereabouts of people, places, and organizations. Personally, I use GPS to provide myself with directions so that I can move from place to place. Technological advancements allow for the continued progress of GPS systems; thus, I am very excited to see what is to come of GPS technology in the coming years.

Assignment #2 | Top 10 Inventions

This week's assignment involved the top ten inventions (technology advancements) that changed the world. Below, you will find my PowerPoint slides that include a brief description of each invention's history, impact, and significance. In addition, I have included some more notes below to explain my justification for choosing these as my ten inventions. Enjoy!

Wheel - The wheel is arguably considered one of the most important mechanical inventions of all time. The circular mechanism served as the basis to so many later inventions and machines. Without the wheel, there would be no cars or airplanes, and society would undoubtedly function much differently.  

Telephone - The telephone is one of the most powerful communication devices of all time. It has not only transformed the way people talk with one another, but it has also allowed communication technology to progress with inventions like the smartphone existing today. Without the telephone's line of communication, I could not imagine businesses operating in today's society. 

Gasoline-Powered Automobile - The gasoline-powered automobile is one of my most important inventions mainly because its existence allows for ease of travel and movement. Without this machine, mobility would be severely limited and therefore business, trade, and communication would be hindered. 

Internet - The sheer number of people that use the internet today for information access, communication, and business operations is astounding. The internet, although founded by no one man, is a central hub of information within a sphere of technology that has allowed our generation to have unlimited access to a wide variety of applications. 

Compass - The compass is a very important invention, especially with regards to navigation and orientation today. Generations of people have utilized the compass in order to navigate from place to place, based upon the directions "North", "South", "East", and "West". Without the compass, navigation would be radically different in today's world.

Light Bulb - The light bulb is an invention that many people take for granted; however, it is so crucial to everyday life. Without this invention, people would still remain dependent on candles and lanterns, and electric lighting would not completely surround us. The light bulb sparked many other illumination-related inventions and allowed progress in the field of lighting that has resulted in a world surrounded by electric lighting.

Refrigeration - Refrigeration is a key invention due to its ability to preserve. Looking at the food and chemical industries, refrigeration is so vital in order to preserve items over a longer period of time. Without refrigeration, food would not be able to last longer than one or two days, and chemicals used in science would also have a very limited shelf life. 

Computer - The computer is such a very important invention due to the fact that it gives people access to the internet. The computer is a revolutionary machine that allows many applications to run, information to be accessed, and communication to be enabled. Without the computer, many people and businesses could simply not function today.

Printing Press - The printing press has allowed for, above all, the spread of knowledge across people. With the printing press' ability to mass produce books and other forms of text, religion and education were dramatically transformed, as people could now easily share the beliefs and ideals of others.

Penicillin - Penicillin is one of the most important antibiotic discoveries of all time. Serving as treatment for diseases like pneumonia and gonorrhea, penicillin has saved countless lives over the years since its discovery by Fleming in 1928.



Assignment #1 | Introduction

Hello Readers,

Welcome to my Industrial Operations and Engineering Leadership 190G blog!

My name is Anish Patel, and I am a junior here at UC Berkeley. I was born in London, England, but moved to the US when I was six years old. At Berkeley, I am currently studying Business Administration with a Concentration in Engineering Leadership. I have pursued various internships within the business industry, and I most recently worked as a Finance Intern for Genentech in San Francisco. I am very passionate about entrepreneurship and am involved with the Kairos Society, an international organization focused on technology and innovation. In my free time, I enjoy playing and watching soccer, skiing, and bicycling. I am also an avid Arsenal FC supporter and love traveling around Europe.

I chose to take this class because I am very interested in learning how to use patents to protect and commercialize intellectual assets. The course structure, with engaging and interactive assignments, also stood out to me as interesting and unique.

By taking this class, I hope to gain a comprehensive understanding of the process behind patenting an innovation. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I hope to be able to recognize protected technical content and the differences between an effective and a mostly-useless patent. I believe this knowledge will equip me with the tools necessary to one day start a company of my own.
